MARITIME SECURITY

PSO

Protective Services Officers (PSOs) at federal facilities have a critical role in ensuring the safety and security of these sites. Their responsibilities cover a broad range of tasks:

Access Control: PSOs manage and control access points to ensure that only authorized individuals enter the facility.
Patrols: Regular patrols, either on foot, by vehicle, or with security systems, are performed to maintain security and respond quickly to incidents.
Incident Response: PSOs are trained to respond effectively to a range of incidents, coordinating with local law enforcement, fire departments, or other emergency services when needed.
Security Systems Monitoring: They monitor security systems such as CCTV cameras, intrusion detection systems, and fire alarm systems, responding to any alerts generated.
Report Writing: PSOs document all incidents and irregularities, providing a formal record for investigations and legal proceedings.
Public Assistance: They interact with the public, offering assistance, providing directions, and answering questions.
Threat Assessment: PSOs participate in threat assessment activities, identifying potential risks and vulnerabilities within the facility.
Law Enforcement Liaison: PSOs often act as the liaison between the federal facility and local law enforcement, ensuring effective communication and coordination.

Their training regimen is rigorous and ongoing:

Initial Training: New PSOs undergo an intensive two-and-a-half-week training program that covers topics including federal law enforcement, security procedures, emergency response, and customer service, as well as specific training on the use of firearms, non-lethal weapons, and hand-to-hand combat techniques.
Weapons Requalification: PSOs must requalify their service weapons every six months. This requalification involves both classroom instruction and live-fire exercises.
X-Ray Machine Retraining: PSOs undergo retraining every two months to maintain their proficiency in operating X-ray machines and interpreting their output.

These tasks and training ensure that PSOs are well-equipped to handle a wide range of situations, keeping federal facilities safe and secure for all who work in and visit them.
